Danielle Schuur | managing director Software | IBM | Nederland
Age: 33
Education: Management and Organisation, KUB (Catholic University Brabant) The Netherlands
1 Job Orientation
1.1 When did you decide doing vocational training in IT
I didn’t do a vocational training in ICT. Initially I studied Management and Organisation at the Catholic University Brabant. After my graduation I travelled for a year, and after that I started working at IBM. There I entered a trainee program, where I acquired my knowledge on IT.
1.2 Why do you think did you choose this specific education?
I chose this study because I liked the corporate (bedrijfskundige) aspect. Also the possibility to do my internships abroad appealed to me. I chose to work at IBM because IT is an innovating, challenging world.
1.4 What is needed to change career counselling?
I think children need to be stimulated more. For instance by letting them visit companies, and thus giving them the opportunity to give them a realistic image of ICT. ICT is imbedded in everything; show that!
2 Educational training
2.1 Did your expectations and wishes about the vocational training come true?
Yes, because I could use my acquired knowledge in my career
2.4 You have the chance to do advertisment for your profession. Please give us some good reasons why to choose this job.
It is a dynamic job, where you interact with a lot of customers. You work with a large team to achieve great results together. It’s a flexible job, which gives you the freedom to make your job work for you, and be successful.
3Differences women and men
3.1 Women are still underrepresented in IT profession, why do you think this is the case?
I think, even at a very young age, girls have a wrong image of the ICT workfield. They tend to think that, if you work in ICT, all you do is sit behind a computer, programming. That is a very outdated image! Only when they see that ICT is behind almost every process, they can get enthusiastic about it!
Also, I think a lot of ICT corporations are not flexible enough for their employers, for instance, working flexible hours, working part-time or working at home. IBM is flexible in a lot of ways and it sows; there are a lot of women working at IBM!
3.2 What are some typical prejudices which maybe also appeared to you?
Honestly, within IBM I never have had to deal with prejudices. I did however have an incident, when people thought I was a catering lady, serving coffee, instead of the chairperson of the meeting. At that moment I poured the coffee, but after that, I still was the chairperson!
3.3 What would you advice girls who also want to go into IT?
It is a challenging, new and fun world , where you put many of your creative ideas to practise. You can make a difference!
