The UKRC has announced plans to launch a new online database that will help put women at the forefront of science communication and raise the profile of thousands of scientists, engineers and technologists in the UK. It is anticipated that over 2000 women will sign up to the database within the next 18 months alone.

07|21|2005: Central European Centre for Women and Youth in Science database

This unique regional, multi-disciplinary, easily navigable database will give highly qualified women a platform to make themselves more visible. Women scientists can be searched for the purposes of project participation and invitation to advisory committees, boards and expert panels. It will also provide a source for networking for women in the region, and if so desired, they will receive regular mailings on relevant seminars, news and networking opportunities. 07|12|2005 eLearning Awards 2005

European Schoolnet, together with principal partner Young Digital Poland, invites teachers and schools to submit their ICT projects to the eLearning Awards. The eLearning Awards are awarded for the fifth time in 2005 and aim at identifying and awarding excellent practice in using ICT for learning. The eLearning Awards correspond to the main focuses of European and national efforts in education. They highlight common European cultural values by investing in human capacities and teachers' professionalism. Submissions to the eLearning Awards are made through the website. 07|08|2005: LOUPE "Search tool and method for useful cases in problem oriented learning in engineering curricula"

At 15 June 2005 the LOUPE project finished, but the products will still be disseminated. In the LOUPE project an online search tool was developed and tested in close cooperation with technical companies. This tool supports in the development of real life cases/projects which will give students in higher technical education insight in their future profession and professional processes within the context of their course. Furthermore, the LOUPE search tool may assist higher technical courses to enrich their active learning methods and make them more attractive for a varied target group (e.g. female students). Friday 20 May the European Leonardo da Vinci project LOUPE will organise its dissemination conference. The search tool (online search method for cases) will be the final product of an intensive collaboration between higher technical education and the business community. 04|01| 2005: European Forum for Early Career Researchers

The "European Forum for Early Career Researchers" will take place in Otocec/Slovenia on 6-7 May 2005. The event is jointly organised by the Slovenian public foundation "Ad Futura" and the Marie Curie Fellowship Association.

The idea of the Forum is to bring together early career researchers and more experienced colleagues from across Europe, from across disciplines, and from a broad range of professional backgrounds. The event will also be of particular interest to people involved in science policy at national or European level.

03|11|2005: Launch of new EU Expert Group

A new expert group has been launched in the context of the WIR initiative. It involves prominent representatives of European industry and has been set up with a view to analysing the promotion of women in Science and Technology from a business perspective and to develop an integrated approach to the cultural change involved within companies. The kick-off meeting was held on Feb 16th 2005 with around 10 leading companies involved. 03|2005: eTwinning European Launch Conference

The launch of the eTwinning action at European level took place on 14 January 2005 in Brussels during a conference which gathered more than 300 teachers and national and European education authorities.
The eTwinning action was created to give schools the opportunity to learn from and with each other, to share their views and to make friends. It correspondingly promotes the awareness of the multilingual and multicultural European model of society. eTwinning can be defined as a long term partnership where at least two schools from at least two different European countries use ICT to carry out some form of pedagogically relevant activity together.www.etwinning.net

Today, Safer Internet Day is being celebrated by 65 organisations in 30 countries across the world. Safer Internet Day 2005, held under the patronage of the European Union's information society and media commissioner, Viviane Reding, features an internet adventure storytelling contest for children in 19 countries and 16 languages, to be judged in June. The day is part of a global drive by awareness-raising partners to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people. For a long time there has been a concern that women are excluded from computers and thus from the information society. Still, women are relatively absent from computer science and the design of ICT products. However, there are important changes going on: the transformation of ICTs and their penetration into the home, education and the workplace means the level of use of computers, the internet, mobiles phones and other systems by women and men is converging. 01 | 2005: A new generation of EU programmes for education and training, culture, youth and the audiovisual sector in 2007-2013

The European Commission adopted ambitious proposals on 14 July for the next generation of EU programmes in education, training, culture, youth and the audiovisual sector. The aim is to have the new programmes approved by the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament before the end of 2005. They will run from 2007 to 2013. http://europa.eu.int

12|04: Dossier in the DJI Bulletin - Special English edition 2004

In 2002, the DJI project "Gender mainstreaming in child and youth services" was assigned by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in Germany to provide the scientific monitoring of services implementing the concept.
Initial results of the monitoring show that the new gender mainstreaming principle has triggered internal discussions of gender issues among the services at a number of levels, from their organisational structure to human resources to expert activities.

10|2004: update of the webpage of WWW-ICT

Why are there so few women among the professionals of information and communication technology (ICT)? What are the barriers to women choosing and developing careers in ICT professions, and what changes are likely to improve their access and position in this labour market? This European project (Information Society Technologies, 5th Framework Programme) hinges on the development of an integrated approach to the different aspects of gender disparity in the ICT professions. Research teams in seven European countries have carried out in-depth empirical studies. They suggest targeted recommendations for agents of change in this area. The finale synthesis report and more information on the project objectives can be found on the updated website and in the downloadable presentation leaflets, available in English , French , Italian , German (PDF format).

09|23|2004: Cross-European consortium launches a women and young researchers' resource centre

A new Centre promoting gender equality in research and development and young scientists in the Central European region started its activities on 23 September witch the launch of http://www.cec-wys.org/ , the website of the Central European Centre for Women and Youth in Science (CEC-WYS). Funded by the European Commission, the Centre is the first regional centre to advance the position of women scientists and young scientists in Central Europe. (download the press release )
